Student Athlete Sues Over Severed Finger

Let's hope, for his sake, that a Lyons Township High School student who lost his left ring finger in a weight lifting accident is right-handed (Pioneer Local).

Football player Daniel Mattucci was pumping iron with teammate William Bronec III at the school's weight room when, he claims, Bronec dropped a 50-pound dumbbell on Mattucci's left hand, which severed the ring finger.

Weight lifting accidents sometimes happen, but according to his claims it seems as if there's plenty of negligence to go around.

According to the complaint, Bronec should have warned Mattucci that he was about to drop the dumbbell (if it was in fact intentional) or at least should have better controlled it. But he didn't, allegedly, and is named as a defendant in the suit.

Lyons Township teacher and football coach Brian Kopecky also is named in the suit for failing to properly supervise the workout, as a portion of the complaint quoted in the Pioneer Local article claims:

"[Kopecky] committed the unauthorized practice of medicine [when he] intentionally failed to obtain medical assistance for [Mattucci] and instead instructed other Lyons Township High school students to render medical care to [Mattucci] and to retrieve [Mattucci's] severed finger."

And believe it or not, the complaint also claims that school officials (the school and district are named as defendants) did not allow paramedics access to Mattucci, who says he had to make his way to the ambulance "on his own."

He's seeking damages of more than $200,000.

So where's the finger?
