Man Disfigured From Falling Ice Sues FedEx

It was a freak accident, but Aurora businessman Peter Morano claims Federal Express could have prevented the gruesome injury caused by ice that he believes fell from one of its trucks (NBC Chicago). A large, heavy sheet of ice broke away from the truck and sliced through Morano's windshield and right into his face.

It's too early to know for sure, but he may never regain vision in his left eye. He also suffered lacerations and several broken bones around his eye.

Certainly the truck driver did not mean for this to happen, but Morano claims a better-maintained truck would have prevented it.

Chicago injury attorney Timothy S. Tomasik, who's representing Morano, filed a petition asking Federal Express for video surveillance and logs from its Aurora facility near where the incident took place. It's not certain whether FedEx is responsible but Tomasik believes it's likely.

Just four states, not including Illinois, have laws in place requiring truck drivers to clear accumulated ice and snow from their vehicles. He expressed his client's newfound crusade to change Illinois laws in the article:

"We will need to make that company's drivers more aware of the dangers involved in not clearing ice and snow off the tops of trucks and other vehicles before they take off at high speeds and pass under viaducts."

Morano received emergency surgery but probably will need additional operations to restore structure to his damaged face.
