One man shot with a Taser stun gun told British reporters that the experience was "like someone reached into my body to rip my muscles apart with a fork" (Independent UK). Yikes. So why did an off-duty Kankakee Police officer think it was okay to Taser three boys in a junior high school classroom (ABC Chicago)?
Stunned parents of two of the 12-year-old boys would like to know the answer to that question and have filed federal injury lawsuits totaling more than $10 million (ABC Chicago).
The unidentified officer who Tasered the children was placed on administrative leave for the unauthorized demonstration. Both lawsuits name the officer, the City of Kankakee, Kankakee School District 111 and two teachers (likely for standing by and letting the incident happen).
Illinois injury attorney James Meeks, who is representing both boys, also is demanding that the officer be terminated and charged in criminal court.
It's not clear why the officer thought it was a good idea to enter the classroom and remove the Taser from his holster in the first place, but he worked security at Kankakee Junior High School. He allegedly shouted "who wants a Taser?" and found several enthusiastic volunteers, eventually resulting in claims of battery.
One of the boys, who also has a heart murmur, complained of leg pains and was rushed to the emergency room and released shortly thereafter.
